My Best Friend's a Butcher...

A quick posting to end the week:

I am usually not one to nitpick at lyrics. There are lyricists who I love: Jarvis Cocker has to be my number one, and based on the singles he has released so far, James Murphy's hilarious lyrics for the LCD Soundsystem songs have certainly made me pay attention. But, for the most part, as long as a song moves me rhythmically, or envelopes me with waves of sound, the lyrics could be about smelly cheese, and I would not care. Interpol's lyrics have always struck me as a bit odd, but I never put too much thought into them. Somone at Stylus has, and their analysis of the 10 worst Interpol lyrics is a rather amusing read.

i certainly can't dispute your choice of jarvis, but james murphy? i have only the utmost respect for mr. murphy, but other than "losing my edge" (which i'd consider a musical one-off) his lyrics haven't been anything too special.

when it comes to lyrics, i like the "SM trio" of stephin merritt, stephen malkmus, and stuart murdoch. oh, and (stephen) morrissey too.

Perhaps I give too much weight to "Losing My Edge." That said, I find something very self-aware and sarcastic about the lyrics to "Beat Connection" and "Yeah."

I'll throw a couple more out there: Karl Hyde. Maybe I am picking him just because I love Underworld, but his lyrics are a perfect fit for the music. Plus, respect for having lyrics that can be interpreted a variety of ways (eraser of love v. a razor of love)and then playing with the mystery in the accompanying visuals.

Also, much love to Terry Hall of the Specials. Influential on Mike Skinner, Damon Albarn, and every other white Brit in his 20s and 30s.
